How The XC90 T8 Plug-in Hybrid Charts a Course Toward Volvo’s 2019 Electrification Goal

Back when it was announced that Volvo’s flagship luxury crossover would offer a 400-horsepower hybrid powertrain as it’s top-shelf engine, the automotive industry was blown away. Now that we think on it, the reactions were quite similar to the announcement this past summer about the brand’s plans to electrify it’s whole lineup by 2019. But if you’re looking to see what the future holds, the 2018 Volvo XC90 T8 Plug-in Hybrid has some of the answers already.

The impressive XC90 T8 combines a unique 2.0-liter supercharged/turbocharged inline-four with an 87 horsepower, 177 lb-ft of torque electric motor for a total system output of 400 horsepower and 472 lb-ft of torque, and returning 25 mpg combined. That’s pretty impressive from a power and fuel efficiency standpoint, but the electric elements on this model does more than save money at the pump and headaches when merging. It also powers on-board systems, such as safety sensors, the available four-corner adaptive air suspension, and more.

Combined that with Volvo’s plans to add a 48-volt electrical system to its whole range, and it’s clear that the Swedes are halfway there, and are definitely not living on a prayer. By offering a variant of this technology in the XC90, they can continue to fine-tune its exceptional offerings while getting customers used to the shape of things to come.

And let us tell you, the vision is a bold one. At the press conference last year for Volvo’s 20th anniversary of their all-wheel drive system, an engineer detailed how the XC90 T8 paved the way for the brand’s electrification ambitions. Where the current hybrid system can keep the vehicle automatically levelled at speed, future iterations could see an independent electric motor on each wheel. This can help control traction in conjunction with AWD, suspension feel, and even better braking performance!

But we would be remiss to assume you’re reading this to plan for a car purchase over a year away! The 2018 XC90 T8 Plug-in Hybrid is here, and it’s certainly ready to take you places in the lap of luxury. Charging in 2.5 to 6 hours depending on which adaptor you choose—not to mention tax credits—it’s far more likely you may be crunching the numbers to see how much this premium utility can save you and your family money in the long run.
