Volvo Set to Begin Next Generation S60 Production in the U.S.

Executives at Volvo have recently announced that the production of new S60 sedans will come from the automaker’s first North American plant.

The Swedish auto brand’s American factory will begin production of the next generation S60 models in 2018 in order to keep up with demand for this highly sought-after model.

The plant is estimated to produce approximately 100,000 cars each year, half of which will be exported internationally to meet the global demand.

Despite having plants in both Sweden and China already, the automaker ventured to the U.S. in 2014 to help reduce costs and to build closer ties with American customers.

“…We need to come closer to our customers, we have to understand them if we want to grow, and it's a sign of commitment to our retailers," stated Håkan Samuelsson, Volvo CEO.

The updated S60 is set to include a complete redesign (similar to that of the new full-size S90 sedan model), a 250 horsepower 2.0 liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine, and upgraded features such as a 9.3-inch touchscreen infotainment system. Also included are numerous safety advancements such as semi-autonomous driving technology and Volvo’s IntelliSafe system.
